What you need to know about PFAs

PFAs are a group of man-made chemicals that are characterized by their unique carbon-fluorine bonds. While their resistance to heat, water, and other environmental stressors makes them an attractive ingredient for use in cosmetics, the risks associated with PFAs far outweigh any potential benefits.

One of the primary reasons that PFAs are used in cosmetics is their ability to resist water and oil. This property makes them ideal for use in waterproof and long-lasting makeup, as well as in other products that are designed to withstand exposure to moisture or oils. However, given the significant risks associated with PFAs, do we really need our makeup to last for 24 hours?

Why should we be concerned about PFAs?

Strongly persistent, PFAs don’t break down easily in the environment or in the body. Highly mobile, they contaminate soil, water, and any products derived from them, and they can have long-lasting and far-reaching effects on ecosystems and wildlife. Exposure to PFAS is linked to cancer, liver disease, hormonal disruptions, reproductive and developmental issues, and immediate exposure when applied to the skin on highly absorbent areas such as lips and the eye area.

Are PFAs really needed in cosmetics?

As a responsible brand, we believe it's essential to take steps to minimize our exposure to these chemicals wherever possible. This may involve choosing cosmetic products that do not contain PFAs, as well as using alternatives to non-stick cookware and other products that may contain these chemicals. Additionally, we support efforts to regulate and phase out the use of PFAs in consumer products, and we encourage manufacturers to develop safer alternatives that do not pose the same risks to human health and the environment.
